This is a vignette of a fish on land, made by Isaac Weissenbruch sometime in the 19th century. It’s a humble scene, economically rendered, yet it carries a potent charge. Weissenbruch made this print by incising an image into a metal plate, likely copper or steel. The linear precision suggests that he may have used a burin, a tool favored by printmakers for its ability to create clean, precise lines. The fine network of lines that comprise the image, especially those defining the scales and contours of the fish, speaks to a mastery of technique. Interestingly, there is a great contrast between the detailed depiction of the main subject of the fish and the loose hatching to create the background. This suggests a certain ambivalence, as though the artist is more interested in the materiality of the fish than in its environment. In the end, Weissenbruch's vignette reminds us that the value of art resides not only in its subject, but in the craft, the making, and the context of its creation.
