Curatorial notes
Reinier Vinkeles created this allegorical depiction of Amsterdam using etching, a printmaking technique. The composition centres on the Amsterdam city virgin who sits enthroned, bathed in celestial light, which creates a powerful focal point. Note how the artist masterfully uses line to direct our gaze upwards, from the clustered figures at the base to the airy cherubs above. This upward movement is reinforced by the verticality of the architectural elements and the sweeping lines of the drapery. Consider the historical context in which this work was produced, a time of significant social and political change. Through this lens, the virgin becomes a potent symbol, embodying the aspirations and values of the city, and perhaps reflecting contemporary debates about civic identity and governance. The artist seems to invite us to contemplate not just what Amsterdam is, but what it aspires to be.
