Chul Hyun Ahn made Tunnel #5 (After Dan Flavin) using light and mirrors to create an illusion of depth. The work has a curious feeling, right? It’s all about how light bounces and plays tricks on our eyes. I love how Ahn uses such simple materials, industrial-style fluorescent tubes, but the effect is pure magic. It's like he's building a tunnel into another dimension right before our eyes. See how the light seems to stretch on forever into a dark void? The cross shape is interesting. It’s both simple and symbolic, a way of marking a space, kind of like signing a painting. Looking at this, I'm reminded of the light works of James Turrell. Both artists invite us to question what we see and how we perceive space. It's all about looking, and then looking again.
