Edmund Blampied made this print, Night Time, Dieppe, using etching techniques, which is really about finding a way to capture a moment, a mood, in a series of lines. Look at how Blampied renders the scene with such a light touch, almost like a memory fading in and out. The lines are so delicate, creating this incredible sense of atmosphere. The horse and cart is weighted down, made heavy through many lines, and that contrasts to the open sky. It's like Blampied is saying that art isn't about perfection but about capturing something real and fleeting, and maybe that’s the point. I am reminded of Whistler, the way the image fades into nothing. Art is a process, an ongoing experiment with seeing and feeling.
