Edouard Baldus made this photograph of a plaster cast for a ceiling decoration in the Louvre. Baldus, working in mid-nineteenth century France, navigated the intersection of art and documentation during a period of massive urban redevelopment in Paris. Here, Baldus directs his lens to capture not the Louvre itself but a plaster cast for the Louvre, highlighting the architecture’s decorative embellishments. We see a square frame filled with symbolic figures of cherubs and ornate detailing. This photograph allows us to reflect on the labor and artistry involved in creating the spaces of power. By focusing on this detail, Baldus invites us to consider the complex relationship between power, representation, and artistic expression, while also suggesting the deeply personal experiences that architecture evokes.
