Curator: Dame Elisabeth Frink's sculpture, simply titled "Bird," at Tate Britain, strikes me as immediately menacing. The bronze is dark, almost black, and the sharp angles suggest a predator. Editor: Birds are often symbols of freedom and transcendence, but here, it seems distorted. What might Frink be suggesting about freedom's limitations or the bird's predatory role within societal structures? Curator: Well, birds have held varied symbolism across cultures. Think of the raven, often associated with ill omens or death. This piece could tap into those darker associations. The rough texture, the sense of weight... it feels grounded, earthbound, not soaring. Editor: Exactly! And the way it's grounded, it's like a memory made solid. The collective unconscious holds images of birds as both divine messengers and scavengers. Frink seems to exploit this duality. Curator: I see your point. It reminds me that art's power often resides in its ambiguity, allowing space for our own interpretations shaped by history and experience. Editor: Agreed. By engaging with these symbols, we can better understand how the past continues to inform our present.

This strong, alert bird is one of Elizabeth Frink’s earliest sculptures. She continued to explore the bird theme over the next two decades. ‘In their emphasis on beak, claws and wings… they were really vehicles for strong feelings of panic, tension, aggression and predatoriness,’ she said. But she resisted symbolic readings of these works. She cautioned: ‘They certainly were not surrogates for human beings or “states of being”.’ Gallery label, September 2023
