This untitled etching was created by Wols, who was born Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze, but best known by his pseudonym, in the mid-20th century. Notice how the soft, muted tones of the etching create an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. Wols was interested in the Surrealist and Existentialist movements, and his work often shows this engagement with the absurd and the search for meaning. Here, the biomorphic forms, with their delicate, spidery lines, seem to emerge from the very texture of the paper. The ambiguous shapes suggest organic growth while also hinting at decay. Wols’s work often seems to deconstruct traditional notions of form and space. The lines and shapes challenge our perceptions, as they don’t conform to any familiar structure. Perhaps this represents a deeper philosophical quest, mirroring the post-war search for new forms of expression. The artwork invites us to question fixed meanings and embrace the transient, ever-changing nature of existence.
