This footstool, paired with a Stadtholder's chair, was crafted by an anonymous artist. It features the coat of arms of the province of Groningen. Once, this stool offered respite, a place for someone to rest their feet, perhaps easing the burdens of leadership. Its very existence speaks to the rigid social hierarchies of its time. The Stadtholder, a figure of power, sat elevated, while others stood or were seated on less ornate furnishings. The use of specific heraldry wasn't merely decorative; it was a bold statement of authority and dominion. Consider how such an object subtly reinforces societal structures. It invites us to reflect on how even the most commonplace items can embody complex social and political meanings. We all carry the weight of history, sometimes it is nice to put your feet up.
