Emily Kame Kngwarreye made 'Yam Awelye' with what looks like a brush and paint, in a way that feels both simple and incredibly complex. I find myself drawn to the black lines and how they confidently navigate the canvas, creating a kind of map or web. You can almost feel the artist’s hand moving, deciding where to go next. It’s cool how the black paint isn't trying to hide anything. It’s thick, bold, and kinda raw. The white peeking through isn’t just empty space but feels like a part of the conversation. Thinking about the bottom-left corner, there’s this spot where lines intersect and overlap, and it's really a nice demonstration of how Kngwarreye creates depth. It’s not just about filling the space but building layers, stories, and histories with each stroke. There is a kind of kinship with the drawing of Cy Twombly in the scale and ambition that feels quite radical. This piece doesn't tell you what to think; it invites you to think, to feel, and to see differently.
