Editor: This is Gloria Ortiz-Hernandez’s "Digit III," its date is unknown. What strikes me most is the contrast between the defined square and the hazy edges, almost like a digital rendering glitch. What do you see in this piece from a formalist perspective? Curator: Observe how the central gray square occupies a calculated space within the larger white field. The texture, achieved through subtle gradations, defies a purely geometric reading. What does the square signify, in relation to the ground? Editor: I hadn't considered that reading. The texture complicates the geometry and perhaps invites introspection on the relationship between precision and ambiguity. Curator: Precisely. It is in this interplay that the work's true interest resides. Editor: Thank you. I'll look at abstract works differently now.
