Curatorial notes
Pieter van der Plas II rendered this portrait of Adriaan Dortsman with the etching technique. Here, we observe Adriaan Dortsman adorned in a lavish lace collar, a symbol of status and wealth during the Dutch Golden Age, echoing similar displays of opulence found in portraits across Europe. This collar, however, is not merely decorative, it speaks to a deeper human desire for recognition and social validation. One can trace the roots of adornment back to ancient civilizations where garments and ornamentation were used to denote rank and power. Over time, its significance has shifted, evolving from indicators of tribal belonging to symbols of personal identity. The cyclical progression of the symbols of wealth demonstrates how deeply human concepts are continually revisited, reshaped, and re-contextualized. It's a powerful force that continues to engage viewers, resonating on a deep, subconscious level.
