This photograph of Goenoengsari was taken in May 1926 by an anonymous artist. It's a world of grays, from the foreground field, to the far away buildings on the horizon. I wonder what it was like for this photographer, whoever they were, to set up their camera in this open space. The expanse of the land reminds me of the blank canvas that taunts me in my studio sometimes. There’s a dialogue between the artist and the world, each influencing the other, forming an archive of personal and cultural memories. The buildings in the distance stand as witnesses to unseen narratives, evoking a longing for connection. Even with photography, there's that conversation between the artist, the machine, and the world. The medium itself leaves a mark, as the process becomes part of the artwork’s story. It's the same with all of us artists, each learning from those that came before, responding to their ideas, and adding our own voice. We are all in a conversation with each other, across time.
