This silver pendant depicts Hendrik Danielsz. Hooft, a mayor of Amsterdam, and was made by an anonymous artist. Hooft’s identity as a member of the ruling class is clearly communicated through the wig, the clothing, and the material of the pendant. The image on the pendant provides insight into how power and status were visibly displayed in Dutch society. It maintains conventional representations through recognizable markers of wealth and authority. Wearing this likeness, we can imagine Hooft reminding himself and signaling to others, his position in society. The pendant is a subtle yet powerful reminder of the role that visual markers play in shaping our understanding of identity and social hierarchy.
