This is a study, made with pen by Albert Neuhuys. In this sketch, we find a motif deeply rooted in human experience: the interior, the domestic space. In Neuhuys's composition, the arrangement of figures, the objects around them, speak to the idea of shelter and refuge. The interior of the house is a symbol of the inner self; its furniture, a representation of what we deem essential. The idea of the 'home' appears in medieval depictions of the Nativity, where Mary and the newborn Christ are found inside modest dwellings. This symbol, charged with emotional and psychological significance, transcends eras and contexts. The psychological power of domestic space cannot be denied. It is a space that continues to evolve, reflecting our deepest desires and providing a powerful link to our collective memory.
