Inhuldiging van Willem I Frederik als koning der Nederlanden te Brussel
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
This silver medal, crafted by Johannes Petrus Schouberg, commemorates the inauguration of Willem I Frederik as King of the Netherlands in Brussels. The medal's circular form and monochromatic palette immediately suggest a classical sensibility. One side presents a profile of Willem I, encircled by text, while the other depicts the King receiving a document from a classically draped figure. Schouberg employs a formal, almost austere, composition. The figures are rendered with a Neoclassical precision, emphasizing line and form over expressive texture. Consider the semiotics at play: the King, the allegorical figure, and the document all function as signs within a structured system of power and legitimacy. The medal, as a whole, operates within a visual language designed to communicate authority. Yet, we can ask, how might such a carefully constructed image also function as a site of contestation, open to diverse interpretations of power and national identity? This piece invites us to consider how its formal qualities contribute to its symbolic weight.
