Curator: Yves Tanguy, a key figure in Surrealism, painted this intriguing canvas, "Azure Day." The painting currently resides in the Tate Collections. Editor: It feels like a dreamscape—or perhaps a landscape of the subconscious? Those biomorphic shapes definitely evoke some kind of primal feeling. Curator: Tanguy's work often explored the relationship between the organic and inorganic, a common theme during a time of industrial and social upheaval. The title might suggest serenity, but is that what you really feel? Editor: "Azure Day" hints at an idyllic scene, but those forms suggest something unsettling—they’re alien and yet vaguely familiar, like forgotten memories. They remind me of the symbols Jung might discuss, archetypes adrift in a strange, personal sea. Curator: It's interesting to consider how Tanguy’s time in the merchant marine might have shaped his perception of space and form. Perhaps these are abstracted landscapes of the mind, influenced by his early experiences. Editor: A mariner’s vision, definitely. They might appear to be symbols of something more profound, but perhaps they’re echoes of the sea, transformed and imbued with emotional weight over time. What do you make of it now? Curator: It's a powerful statement on the nature of reality and the role of the artist in interpreting it. Editor: Yes, and one that invites us to see beyond the surface, delving into our own inner landscapes.

Colourful groups of forms and shapes occupy the foreground of this work. They deny any rational explanation. But they have been associated with the ancient standing stones of Tanguy’s native Brittany in France. Tanguy joined the surrealist movement in 1925, the year after its formation. As a surrealist artist, he was committed to exploring the unconscious mind. Tanguy often depicted vast dream-like spaces, like the one seen here in Azure Day. Gallery label, August 2020
