Curatorial notes

Isaac Israels made this sketch, Danseres op het toneel, with pencil on paper, and what strikes me is how economical it is. It's like he's trying to capture the dancer's movement with the fewest possible lines. Look at the way he suggests the folds of the costume with just a few quick strokes! It’s all about the gesture. The lines are so tentative and searching, you can almost see his hand moving across the page, trying to catch the fleeting moment. There’s a real sense of immediacy, like it was done in one go. It makes me think of Degas and his drawings of dancers, that same sense of capturing a momentary glimpse of something beautiful and ephemeral. It's less about perfection and more about capturing the energy. And that, for me, is what makes art so exciting—that it can be so open to interpretation, so full of possibilities.
