Donald Shaw MacLaughlan made this etching, "Lynton, England," and honestly, I'm trying to imagine him there, pulling up to this old street. The network of fine black lines are so delicate. It’s as if he’s feeling his way through the scene, picking out details, and capturing the atmosphere of the place. Look at the light filtering through the trees, and how he’s built up the shadows with these tiny, precise marks. It's a very descriptive scene. The texture of the buildings and the cobblestones is so tactile. I get the sense that MacLaughlan really wants to show us the place, not just what it looks like, but also how it feels to be there. As artists, we’re always in conversation with each other, riffing off what came before, and trying to push things in new directions. Painting, drawing, and printmaking are these amazing ways we have to express ourselves, to dig into our experiences, and to make something new and meaningful.
