Dirck Nab drew this 'Sunny' dune landscape using pencil, and I love how he's built it up with so much energy. It's all about the process, a layering of marks that feel both chaotic and controlled. I am drawn to the lower right corner, where the scribbles are so dense they almost become a solid mass. Look at the way he varies the pressure, how some lines are dark and decisive, others light and feathery, creating a sense of depth and texture. You can almost feel the wind rustling through the tall grasses. It’s like Nab is digging into the paper, trying to capture the essence of the landscape. Nab’s work reminds me a little of Philip Guston’s late drawings, that same raw, almost obsessive mark-making. This piece embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations. It is an ongoing conversation.
