Will Be, Will Be 1987

This poster, "Will Be, Will Be...", by Branko Bačanović uses flat planes of colour, black and white photography, and graphic, blocky text. It feels like a snapshot of a moment, a decision, a feeling - all held together with a bold and confident hand. I am really drawn to the marriage portrait at the top, framed by a decorative rectangle, like a dream or memory. Below that, the canary-yellow wings feel like a burst of energy. The wings are anchored by that simple, almost childlike, line of blue. It grounds the image, and makes the yellow sing all the more. I find myself thinking about how the colour balance is handled. There’s something in this piece of work which feels like early Matisse, but simplified. In fact, this poster is a real conversation starter! It doesn't try to be something it isn't. Instead it confidently celebrates its message of, “Will Be, Will Be...”
