This double spout vessel depicting an abstract animal or being was made by the Nazca people out of earthenware. Ceramics are fundamental to the archeology of ancient cultures. The thing about clay is that it’s everywhere; it’s just degraded rock. It’s free, but that doesn’t mean it comes without a cost. The labor involved in creating pottery, the gathering and preparation of the clay, the forming of the object, the painting, and finally the firing – all of this is considerable. The form is hand-built, with two spouts connected by a bridge. The surface is burnished to a smooth finish, then painted with various colors. Notice the painted design of an abstract animal or being. The fineness of this decoration speaks to the potter's skill. Ultimately, this vessel underscores the central lesson of craft: that even the humblest materials, when transformed by human ingenuity, can carry tremendous cultural weight.
