Margit Selska created this moody landscape, Over the Dniester River, with oil on canvas. I imagine her standing en plein air, working fast to capture the changing light. The scene is a mix of dusky mauves and greens, laid down with decisive strokes. You can almost feel the artist's hand moving, smearing and layering paint to build up the composition. The river snakes through the landscape, a pink ribbon under a dreamy sky. A scattering of pink flowers in the foreground offers a sharp contrast to the yellow fields behind. I bet Selska felt the pressure to catch the light and atmosphere. Maybe she was thinking about the Fauves, or even some of the early Expressionists, but she found her own way. It’s painting as experience, alive with the push and pull of observation and expression. We keep working, building on the past, and hoping to create something new!
