This page, made by Firmin-Didot & Cie in 1882, features a collection of women adorned in elaborate hats, each a symbol of status and style in the late 19th century. Observe how each hat is crowned with feathers. These plumes, once attributes of gods and warriors, have, over time, been refashioned into emblems of elegance, adorning the heads of fashionable women. One cannot help but see echoes of ancient headdresses, now transformed into mere fashion statements. Think of the peacock feathers in Renaissance portraits, symbols of vanity. Here, the feathers have shifted again, yet they retain a subconscious allure, hinting at both beauty and transience. The collective memory of these symbols persists, engaging us on a visceral level.
