Hans Heinrich Wägmann created this drawing of Saint Nicholas in the 16th or 17th century. Clad in elaborate liturgical vestments and holding a bishop’s crozier, the saint is depicted with three golden spheres. These spheres, according to legend, represent the dowry he secretly provided to three impoverished maidens, saving them from a life of destitution. This symbol of the three spheres can be traced back to pre-Christian symbols of fertility and abundance. Think of the goddesses bearing fruit in ancient Roman frescoes. Over time, the symbol has resurfaced, evolving from pagan origins into a Christian emblem of charity. The act of giving, of providing sustenance and hope, touches a primal chord within us. The image of Saint Nicholas thus engages us on a deep, subconscious level. The cyclical progression of this symbol resurfaces, evolves, and takes on new meanings across historical contexts.
