This photograph of Munich - Meiserstrasse? by Andy Warhol is a study in light, shadow, and architectural form. I can imagine Warhol, always the observer, standing on the street, tilting his camera upward to capture this monumental building. The grainy texture gives it an almost painterly quality, like a charcoal drawing with soft gradations of tone. I wonder what drew him to this particular building? Was it the classical facade, the rhythmic repetition of windows, or the stark contrast between the dark sky and the pale stone? Maybe he was thinking of another photographic hero like Eugène Atget? The angle of the shot is interesting. It makes you feel small, looking up at something solid and permanent. It reminds us that, as artists, we're all in conversation with each other, riffing on similar themes and images, trying to find our own angle, our own perspective on the world.
