Editor: This photograph, "From the Arolla Glacier, The Dents des Bouquetins, Pennine Alps", was taken by George Perry Ashley Abraham. It gives me a sense of the sublime, of nature's overwhelming power. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I see a landscape burdened by the weight of colonial narratives. The ‘discovery’ and naming of such vistas often erased indigenous relationships with the land. How might we re-imagine this landscape outside a Western, conquering gaze? Editor: That’s a really interesting point. I hadn't considered the power dynamics inherent in landscape photography. Curator: Exactly! Consider how photography, even then, shaped perceptions and solidified ownership. It's a stark reminder of how we must critically engage with even the most seemingly objective representations. Editor: This has really changed my perspective on this photograph. Thanks! Curator: Mine, too. It's essential to challenge these visual histories.
