This is an anonymous porcelain bowl, currently held in the Rijksmuseum. The cobalt blue brushstrokes on the pristine white ground create an intriguing visual narrative. The bowl's circular form is not just a container but a canvas, the curvature subtly distorting the painted scene, challenging our perception. The continuous landscape, rendered in meticulous detail, invites a semiotic reading. The figures, architecture, and natural elements form a complex system of signs. Notice the contrast between the detailed narrative scene and the abstract pattern along the rim, a juxtaposition that disrupts any singular interpretation. Consider how the artist uses the bowl's concavity to play with perspective and scale. The scenes seem to fold in on themselves, creating a world that's both intimate and expansive. It's this interplay between form and content that invites us to consider how the material object itself shapes our understanding of the story it tells.

Depicted on one side of this bowl is a landscape with three men in a boat; the other side bears the whole text from the Second Red Cliff Rhapsody by Su Shi. This is the reason why this vessel is known as the ‘Red Cliff bowl.’ The scene presents Su Shi and his friends taking a nocturnal boat ride to the Red Cliff.
