Curatorial notes
This is an anonymous print titled ‘Camee met de personificatie van Afrika’ held at the Rijksmuseum. The print depicts a cameo of a woman in profile who is meant to symbolize the continent of Africa. What does it mean to personify a continent? What does it mean to give it a gender? We see the figure adorned with an elephant headpiece. The woman's facial features, rendered through a European lens, are generalized and idealized. This image reflects the complex historical relationship between Europe and Africa, a relationship marked by exploration, trade, and, regrettably, colonialism and the commodification of people. The print serves as a reminder of the power dynamics inherent in representation and the ways in which cultural identities can be shaped and perceived through the lens of another. It is an exercise in understanding and untangling the problematic ways in which identity has been constructed through art.
