John Gossage made this photograph, Untitled, location and date unknown. I love the ordinary quality of Gossage's work, the way he finds beauty in the mundane. There's an attention to surface here that resonates with me. Look at the wall, the layers of grey, the way the light hits it. The marks on the window. It’s about the light, the forms, the textures of these things. You can imagine him, walking around, finding this little corner of the world, and thinking, "Yes, this is it." The taped up window adds a sense of human presence, a makeshift repair. I think of other artists who find beauty in the everyday like Ed Ruscha or Stephen Shore, but Gossage’s approach feels particularly quiet, almost meditative. It's like he’s inviting us to slow down and really look. It’s a reminder that art isn't always about grand gestures, it can be about noticing the things we usually overlook.
