Three Kings Altarpiece (closed)
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Hans Baldung created this altarpiece around 1505 to 1510 using oil on panel. When the altarpiece is closed, two female figures dominate each panel with vibrant, contrasting color palettes. On the left, the figure of St. Catherine presents a striking contrast between the textures of her ornate dress and the smooth, almost liquid quality of her red robe. The sword she casually grasps creates a visual tension with the broken wheel at her feet. Adjacent, the figure of St. Agnes offers a muted contrast. Her patterned gown and the soft lamb at her side create a visual field that is rich in detail yet subdued in tone. These contrasting visual elements, through line, color and form, invite an interpretation that goes beyond mere representation, suggesting a dialogue about power, fragility, and redemption within the historical context of the period. The painting challenges viewers to decode its deeper meanings.
