Joseph Pennell etched Northumberland Avenue in 1905. Look at the cross hatching and frenetic energy of mark-making, it's like he's trying to capture not just the buildings but the very air of London. There's a real sense of layering and depth created through the varying densities of lines. Notice the way the ink pools in certain areas, creating subtle tonal shifts. The surface of the paper is also part of the story, its texture peeking through the delicate lines. The artist's hand is so visible. The way Pennell renders the sky is particularly interesting, with these sweeping, almost chaotic lines that somehow suggest both movement and stillness. It reminds me of Whistler's prints, but with a bit more grit and urgency. Ultimately, it’s about embracing the messy, imperfect nature of both art and life.
