Curatorial notes

Norbert van den Berg captured this view of the Sorrento coast with Villa Tritone in a photograph dated August 1966. The scene's tranquility is disrupted by the imposing structure of the villa, perched dramatically on the cliffs. The villa acts as a modern echo of ancient fortifications, and the building's presence evokes the age-old human desire to dominate and transform nature. This primal instinct manifests across millennia, from the ziggurats of Mesopotamia to Renaissance fortresses. In each, we see humanity asserting its will against the natural world. The sea, with its changing moods, embodies the untamed, subconscious forces that both attract and unsettle us. Van den Berg captures not just a landscape, but the enduring tension between the constructed world of man and the infinite, unpredictable realm of nature. These symbols remind us of the cyclical patterns of history and the continuous reinterpretation of our place within the cosmos.
