This drawing of a donkey cart was made by Donald Mennie some time before 1944. Just imagine him, pencil in hand, trying to capture this scene of a pad met door ezels getrokken kar. It's all about movement, isn’t it? You can feel the earth and dust being kicked up by the donkeys' hooves, even though it's still. I wonder what it was like for him to make it? Did he make it from memory? Was it hard to find the right marks to express all the action and energy? I love the monochrome colour palette, it feels really simple. But also very effective and it seems to capture the essence of the moment. It's like a snapshot. Think of other artists who have used pencil or charcoal to similar effect, like Käthe Kollwitz. All these artists are in dialogue, it's a relay race! They have developed ways of seeing and thinking, it's truly mind-blowing.
