This photograph titled 'Wales' was taken by Robert Frank, though when exactly, is a mystery. But isn't that fitting? The image almost feels like a charcoal drawing, with a hazy, grainy texture, and tones all over the greyscale from almost-black to off-white. I love how Frank coaxes so much out of so little. It reminds me that art is as much about what you leave out as what you put in. Check out the way his subject's face is illuminated, drawing your eye to the act of drinking from that stark white cup. There's a quiet intensity to the scene, a sense of being caught in a private moment. Frank excelled at capturing these slices of life, and you could compare it to his later work in film making and photography. In both he is able to evoke a mood, a time and a place, without telling you what to think or feel. It's an invitation to bring your own experiences and interpretations to the table.
