Curatorial notes
This is Pieter Schenk’s ‘Portrait of Desiderius Erasmus’, an engraving created sometime between 1660 and 1711. Erasmus, who lived from 1466 to 1536, was a towering figure of the Northern Renaissance. As a humanist, Catholic priest, social critic, teacher, and theologian, Erasmus was a man of contradictions who navigated the tumultuous waters of early modern Europe. Schenk's portrait captures the intellectual's quiet intensity, but it also speaks to issues of religious and intellectual identity during a time of immense change. Erasmus sought reform within the Catholic Church, advocating for a return to simpler, more personal faith. The Latin inscription declares Erasmus the ‘Restorer of Latinity’, emphasizing his contribution to Renaissance culture and learning. Consider the complexities of representing a figure who embodied so many of the tensions inherent in the shift from the medieval to the modern world. This portrait invites us to reflect on the ongoing struggle to reconcile faith and reason, tradition and progress, in our own lives.
