Duccio painted this ‘Christ before Pilate’ fragment with tempera on wood panel. The artist uses a visual structure with strong verticals and horizontals which seem to contain and compress the figure of Christ, producing a sense of tension and confinement. Observe how the use of colour and form contributes to a semiotic system that conveys meaning. Christ’s pale robe contrasts sharply with the darker, earthier tones of the Roman soldiers, thus visually separating him from his captors. The gilded halo is a symbolic marker, immediately identifying Christ and contrasting with the grey and metallic helmets which denote the faceless mass of the Roman soldiers. The artist's considered rendering of perspective, while not fully naturalistic, creates an intimate connection, inviting contemplation on themes such as power, innocence, and injustice. This tension between formal structure and symbolic representation encourages us to look beyond the surface.
