Curatorial notes

This undated silver medal was created by Martin Holtzhey. The coin presents us with two distinct yet interconnected visual fields. On one side, the formal arrangement consists of a profile portrait bust of Gustaaf Willem, framed by a circular inscription. The precision of the lines and the symmetry of the composition evoke a sense of classical order. Turning to the other side, we encounter a complex allegory of departure. Here, the figures are grouped in dynamic poses, with Batavia receiving van Imhoff. The ship in the background suggests movement and transition. Holtzhey employs a visual language that draws upon classical and baroque traditions. The arrangement of figures, the interplay of light and shadow, and the use of symbolic elements all contribute to a layered narrative. Consider how the composition directs our gaze. The arrangement of figures and objects within the frame creates a sense of depth and movement, drawing the viewer into the scene. This medal challenges fixed meanings, inviting us to reconsider the relationship between power, representation, and the colonial enterprise.
