This bowl was made by the Ancestral Pueblo people, from clay, with a textured surface decoration. It is a beautiful example of pottery made by hand, without a wheel. The textured surface is remarkable. It was achieved by pressing a tool repeatedly into the wet clay, before firing. The pattern is quite dense and uniform, evidence of the maker’s skill and patience. This kind of all-over treatment is typical of Ancestral Pueblo pottery, which often features intricate geometric designs as well. The black interior contrasts with the red-brown exterior, creating a striking visual effect. Consider how much labor went into sourcing the clay, forming the vessel, decorating the surface, and firing the piece. Pottery like this was essential for food storage and preparation. Appreciating its form allows us to recognize the essential contribution of craft to everyday life.
