This print of soldiers was made by Schalekamp and Van de Grampel in Amsterdam, though we don't know exactly when. The title tells us that these brave warriors are devoted to the noble cause of freedom. The image presents foot soldiers and cavalrymen in regular formation. By printing and distributing images like these, the makers were likely hoping to instill patriotism in the public and support the military. The Netherlands had a complex relationship to military service at this time, which makes the picture all the more interesting. Should ordinary citizens be expected to take up arms for their country? Or is soldiering a job for professionals? By studying sources from the period, such as pamphlets, newspapers, and military records, we can gain a better understanding of the social and political context in which this print was made. This helps us appreciate how images shape public opinion and contribute to national identity.
