This porcelain pitcher was crafted by Ott and Brewer, around 1871-1893. Notice the recurring motif of scales, delicately rendered in white porcelain and accented with gold. These scales immediately bring to mind the protective armor of mythical creatures. In ancient cultures, scales were often associated with dragons, serpents, or fish, embodying power, transformation, and the mysteries of the deep. Think of the dragon guarding its hoard, a symbol of hidden knowledge and formidable strength. The scale pattern creates a sense of both protection and fluidity, as if the pitcher itself is adapting and evolving. This echoes the cyclical nature of life and the continuous flow of ideas through time. The image of the scales has resurfaced and evolved, taking on new meanings in different historical contexts.
