This oboe was made by Castel around the late 18th century. It is constructed from wood, ivory, and metal. Looking at this object, we might consider its social life during this period. In what contexts would the music of an oboe be heard, and who would be playing it? Was it for private entertainment in wealthy houses, or in public concerts attended by a broader audience? To what extent did social class determine access to music in the 1700s? We might ask how courtly patronage shaped the lives and careers of musicians, and to what extent institutions like the symphony orchestra provided new opportunities. In answering such questions, we rely not only on analysis of the object, but on documentary evidence from letters, diaries, and business records. The meaning and value of a work of art are contingent on the ever-changing social and institutional contexts in which they are used and understood.
