Curatorial notes

Carl Bloch created this landscape etching. It depicts a path beside water, rendered in a muted palette of grays and whites. The composition leads the eye along the road, past a solitary tree, towards the distant water. Bloch uses etching to create varied textures; the sky is suggested with delicate, almost imperceptible lines, while the foliage is created with a denser network of strokes. The tree on the right acts as a structural anchor. Its form is not just representational but also serves to balance the composition, preventing it from tilting too heavily to the left. The artwork presents a scene that appears natural, yet it is highly constructed. The path is carefully placed to guide the viewer, and the elements are arranged to create a sense of depth and perspective. This landscape, therefore, becomes more than just a visual record; it is a meditation on how we perceive and organize the natural world. Its formal qualities invite contemplation of the relationship between representation and reality.
