This photograph, titled "Bob Dylan in My Loft on 3rd Avenue, New York," was captured by John Cohen. It's a study in shades of gray, a moment frozen in time. I wonder what the process of capturing Dylan was like. Did he pose? Did the photographer say anything to him? I can imagine Cohen, camera in hand, capturing this pensive moment. Dylan is seated, cigarette in hand, and his expression is melancholic and reflective. There is a contrast between the smooth skin of his face and the crinkled texture of the wall behind him. I'm thinking a lot about surface right now, in my paintings too. The wall looks stained. I wonder if this was intentional in the capture? Or was it just a result of the setting itself. The cigarette smoke adds a sense of transience to the image. It makes me think of other artist pairings across time, like Lee Friedlander and John Cage. These kinds of images remind me that being an artist is about being in an ongoing conversation.
