This engraving by the Master of the Dice depicts the Assumption of Mary, surrounded by cherubs, ascending to heaven as the apostles gaze upwards. The gesture of upward-turned eyes and raised hands is a universal expression of longing and spiritual yearning that echoes through centuries. Think of the ecstatic poses in Bernini's sculptures, or even the reaching figures in ancient Egyptian art, all striving for connection with the divine. Such gestures tap into our collective memory, stirring deep-seated emotions. The motif of the empty tomb is also powerful. It speaks to a promise of resurrection and spiritual triumph, seen in various forms across cultures. The symbol of the crescent moon beneath Mary’s feet is also noteworthy. It has transformed over time, from ancient lunar deities to the Christian symbol of the Immaculate Conception. It reflects how symbols are never static. They evolve, accumulating new layers of meaning as they traverse through history, engaging our subconscious.
