This is ‘Ontwerp voor dolkschede met soldaat’ or ‘Design for a dagger sheath with soldier’ by Meester van de Paardenhoofden. The print presents a design for a dagger sheath, encapsulating the complex relationship between violence, identity, and artistry. At the top we see the figure of a soldier standing triumphantly over another figure whose defeat is emphasized by their prone position. Below, the artist contrasts the harsh realities of conflict with images of lush foliage, from which emerges a sphinx-like figure. The soldier embodies the ideals of masculinity and power of the period, yet the print also implies a subversion of these notions. The juxtaposition of the violence of war with a more decorative aesthetic hints at the ways in which societies can glorify conflict. Consider how personal identity and cultural values become intertwined when one decides to carry such an object.
