This engraving, “Bewening,” was made by Giovanni Cattini around the 18th century. It presents us with a scene of profound grief, dominated by the figure of the dead Christ. The halo signifies his divinity, but it is the mourners that I wish to direct your attention to. Notice the gesture of the mourner at the feet of Christ, head bowed and hands clasped to their chest: a posture of anguish and supplication. This motif echoes through centuries of art. Consider the entombment scenes from ancient Roman sarcophagi, where similar gestures of mourning are displayed. We see it again in medieval depictions of the Passion. It is a primal expression of sorrow, imprinted on our collective memory, resurfacing across epochs. The pose of this figure is a potent symbol that transcends time, engaging us on a deep, subconscious level as it embodies the universal experience of grief and loss.
