Editor: So, here we have "Beach Scene with Man Resting in Shadow of Boat" by Edwin Austin Abbey, in watercolor. The overall feeling is super relaxed, almost languid, don’t you think? The guy looks so chill leaning against that boat! What do you make of it? Curator: Chill is spot on! It breathes, doesn't it? I think of light shifting on skin and the salty breeze. For me, this watercolor captures something fleeting, the luxury of a stolen moment, rendered in transparent washes of color. Notice how Abbey lets the paper *be* the sand, and builds just enough form to suggest, not dictate, the scene. Have you noticed that there's really very little visual distinction made between the boat, the man and the cart; there almost one? Editor: I hadn't really thought about that at all. And those soft, blended edges—so impressionistic. What’s he telling us about the human connection to nature? Or is it simpler than that? Curator: Well, consider plein-air painting, capturing light and atmosphere *in situ*, this was its own revolution in its day. I believe Abbey found profundity by really just capturing that simple and real experience, as it unfolded and happened. Think back – do you feel the sun differently looking at this painting than before? Editor: Absolutely! Now, it’s less about *what* is depicted, and more about the feeling of being there. Thank you! Curator: It was all Edwin Austin Abbey, always already waiting, beneath our thinking-about-thinking. Now it has our appreciation and a newfound glow.
