This woodblock print, “Kustgezicht met vissers die netten binnen halen,” was made in the first half of the 19th century by Totoya Hokkei. Born into a period of social hierarchy, Hokkei’s work subtly reveals the lives of common people. The image captures a communal act: fishermen hauling nets, their bodies unified in labor. Hokkei does not represent these figures as anonymous; they are individualized through posture, clothing, and activity. The fishermen are framed by the serene backdrop of the sea and Mount Fuji. Fuji, often a symbol of power and permanence, contrasts with the daily grind of the fishermen. Hokkei invites us to consider the intersection of nature, labor, and collective identity. The print encourages us to reflect on our connections to each other, our environment, and the labor that sustains us. It reminds us that within grand landscapes, there are the personal stories of struggle, resilience, and community.
