This is E. Harold Jones' facsimile of an inscription from the Pyramid Temple of Amenemhat I. It was made without a date, we're not given the material that Jones worked with, but I love the way the different marks represent the hieroglyphs. The texture and the slight colour palette gives the whole piece a feeling of faded time, as if this was uncovered after being hidden for centuries. My eye is drawn to the cartouche in the centre, it’s contained and neat and the ochre colour seems slightly more vivid than the rest of the inscription. I like how the hieroglyphs here are more compact and layered. This piece reminds me of Cy Twombly's work and his process, especially in how they both handle the weight and history of mark making. With Twombly, the gestures and process of line are more explicit, whereas, in this piece, the colours and faded feeling are subtle. I love art that gives you room to wonder and wander.
