This is A. Rogmans' metal medal commemorating Wilhelmina's inauguration as Queen of the Netherlands. The medal is a study in miniature formalism. Its structure combines a symmetrical cross with a detailed central portrait. The arms of the cross are punctuated with stylized elements. These shapes create a sense of balance and order, while the textured surface of the metal adds depth. Rogmans uses the semiotics of royal power. Note the crown at the top and the portrait of Wilhelmina, framed by laurel leaves, a classical symbol of triumph. The artist employs these motifs to reinforce the medal’s function as a symbol of royal authority. This work invites us to reflect on the interplay between form and iconography. It also prompts questions about how power is represented through objects.
